About the Hindu calendar
The Hindu calendars, known as panchanga, combine lunar months with sidereal solar reckoning and insert an extra month, adhika masa, roughly every 32 to 33 months. Month names run from Chaitra to Phalguna. Regions differ on whether a month ends at the new moon (amanta) or the full moon (purnimanta) and on the starting era, chiefly Vikram Samvat in the north and the Shaka era in the south.
