Byzantine era
About the Byzantine era
The Byzantine Empire dated years from creation, placed on 1 September 5509 BCE, with the year beginning in September. The count was used in Byzantine documents and remained official in Russia until Peter the Great switched to Anno Domini from 1 January 1700. It explains why medieval Russian chronicles give years in the 7000s.
