Ab urbe condita
About the Ab urbe condita
Ab urbe condita, from the founding of the city, counts years from the traditional founding of Rome, which the scholar Varro placed in 753 BCE. Romans themselves usually named years after the two consuls in office, and AUC dating became common mainly among later historians. Julius Caesar's calendar took effect in 709 AUC.
