Roman Republican calendar
About the Roman Republican calendar
Before Caesar's reform the Roman year normally had 355 days, kept in step with the seasons by an intercalary month, Mercedonius, inserted at the discretion of the pontiffs. Political manipulation of intercalation left the calendar months out of step with the seasons by the 40s BCE. The Romans named days by counting back from the Kalends, Nones and Ides of each month.
