Japanese era names
About the Japanese era names
Japan names years by eras, nengō, starting with Taika in 645 and continuous since 701. Since the Meiji Restoration in 1868 there has been one era per emperor, formalised by the Era Name Law of 1979. The current era, Reiwa, began on 1 May 2019 with the accession of Emperor Naruhito; Shōwa, from 1926 to 1989, was the longest.
