Japan's adoption of the Gregorian calendar, 1873
About the Japan's adoption of the Gregorian calendar, 1873
The Meiji government replaced the traditional lunisolar calendar with the Gregorian one with only weeks of notice: the 3rd day of the 12th month of Meiji 5 became 1 January 1873. One motive was financial, as it avoided paying officials for a leap month in the old calendar. Japan kept its era names for year numbering.
