About the Babylonian calendar

The Babylonian calendar began each month at the first sighting of the crescent moon and its year in spring with the month Nisannu. Extra months were added to keep the lunar year in step with the seasons, and by the later first millennium BCE these followed a regular 19-year pattern. The Hebrew month names, such as Nisan, Tishrei and Adar, were adopted from it during the Babylonian exile.
