Alaska calendar change, 1867
About the Alaska calendar change, 1867
When the United States bought Alaska from Russia in 1867, the territory changed from the Julian calendar and from the Asian side of the date line at once. Friday 6 October 1867 was followed by Friday 18 October, so the weekday repeated. Alaska Day, 18 October, commemorates the transfer.
